Description
Larger of the two minesweeper-classes in RN service, the Ton-class was designed for sweeping mines in open and coastal waters. Although not as good an open ocean sweeper as the retired Algerine-class, the Ton-class was still the British primary mine warfare vessel. They were mainly constructed from wood with bronze and aluminium metal fittings, to minimise their magnetic signature and avoid triggering magnetic mines. In the immediate post-October War world, the class were used in a patrol role until their replacement by reactivated patrol boats freed them up for continued mine warfare duties.
