John quickly pulled on his shoes and slung his bag over his shoulders. "Yeah, I think we have everything we need," he replied quickly, grabbing one last gun to carry on-hand as he sent one last glance around. He loved it here, he always had, and he knew this was the last time he'd ever see it. He swallowed his feelings and turned his eyes to the blonde instead. That was who he was going to invest himself in; that was who he was going to rely on. "C'mon!"

Dave skittered out of the already open door, hissing as he noticed the flames were barely six houses down. He noticed a hole in the flames and glanced back at John, pointing to it. It wss tough to hear over the roar, so he shouted "Over there!"

John could see his pointing and nodded, hurrying after Dave. Out of a rush of nerves and anxieties he latched on to one of the boy's hands, holding on to it deathly tight as they rushed to get out before the flames had them in an enclosed circle.

Dave didn't think it weird or unnatural that John was holding his hand; in fact, it was a good way to stay together. He ran more or less beside John, clearing through the hole at the same John did, right before a phone pole cracked and crashed behind them. "That was close," he mumbled, switching to a light jog now that the flames were behind them and-
Oh. Everything in front of them was burned, ashes or in states of going out. Everything was gone. Washington was gone.

John's eyes were huge as he looked around, brows going from raised in shock to sinking, as if tied by twine to his stomach as it reached his toes. Everything was gone... everything. He squeezed Dave's hand tight as he tried not to look around.

Dave squezed back a little, a quick little smile crossing his pale lips. He understood. His home had been taken away from him, or rather he from it, when people had began raiding the apartments and office buildings. He breifly remembered Bro holding him close and jumping to the next fire escape over, a bag around his shoulders, he remembered clutching at the white polo and staring at jeans with rips in the knees, then at nothing but the streets below. They'd barely made it.
He and John had made it. Without getting hurt.
Dave was a man of his word when he promised that it would always be like this.
Always them together.

John's slightly red eyes turned to Dave as he swallowed thickly, his long pianist fingers holding tight to Dave's. "... what now?" He asked softly, voice showing how vulnerable he suddenly felt. For seventeen years he had found safety in that house, in this neighborhood, and he'd just lost both in one fell swoop.
