God, Americans are lucky in an odd way to have this ghost town phenomenon. Let us not focus on the economic collapse and hardship that forces them to be this way but instead think about how bloody cool they are!
Last time we (ie the UK) had a massive depopulation event was the late Middle Ages and those villages are mainly bumps in the ground now. Quite spooky bumps in the groun,d mind you. (Not, that I am hoping for the return of the Plague or the Enclosure Act anytime soon.)

yeah, but the available history in the UK is so much older than available history here...it's cool to think that a certain church/castle/pub/whatever has been standing for hundreds and hundreds of years...

Yeah that is true. When they were building the high-rise near my office, archeologists found a tub of face-cream from Roman times which still had the finger-marks of the last person who had scooped out the gloop! They tested the gloop and it was very similar to what we use for face cream nowadays!
