Description
This is the entrance to Kure's Irifuneyama Park. The park is the former commander-in-chief, Kure Chinjufu (Naval Station or District) residence and grounds, which has since had other bits of old Kure added to it. Kure was once one of Japan's largest military shipyards, producing battleships, cruisers, submarines and destroyers for the Imperial Japanese Navy for nearly half a century. It's most famous product was the battleship Yamato. (The giant one, not the pre-dreadnought) The park paths have been paved with old Kure tram line paving stones, a former powder magazine from the Russo-Japanese War era is now a visitor center and a residence lived in by Capt. Togo when he was assigned to Kure are all here along with the still splendid commander's residence. The clock tower used to be mounted in the Kure Naval Arsenal (shipyard) and it plays a different song every hour. It's a beautiful military park and something I think Norfolk, Virginia could pull of with that little park opposite USS Wisconsin (BB 64).Kure, Hiroshima Prefecture
