Description
Alright lemme be completely honest. Despite him being one of my favorite characters of all time, Superman has always been the hardest character for me to draw (alongside most anime characters with crazy hair). And that’s always been a disappointment because I never feel a.) i can do the character justice and b.) feel comfortable drawing him. Like it never matches the “chimera” Superman in my head.
For me Superman needs to have the slight angularness of John Byrne’s rendition. The natural heft and muscle (Mass NOT definition) of Frank Quitely’s version. Some of the streamlinedness of Bruce Timm (but not making him a mountain like Timm did which i never liked). And finally, he needed to have all of the charm, the warmth, the friendliness, humility, and just overall wonderfulness that was Christopher Reeve. Like Evan Doc Shaner does the superman i have in mind easily (in fact his art was extremely helpful reference).
Drawing Superman’s body is easy. It’s just his head that always always messed me up. Like all those elements i mentioned above? Those also apply to the face. Hell getting his pompador right and not making it look like a duck took residence on his head was a nightmare. And after doing a lot of character studies i finally cracked the code. You can see the reference i made for myself in the third picture.
