Description

The captain was washing off her long day in the shower room when the ship jolted violently starboard. It wasn’t enough to knock her off her feet, but it did make her stumble. As she regained her footing, she froze, wondering what could have caused a ship of that size to jolt like that. They had to have been hit by something big. As she was thinking, the floor began to vibrate under her feet in harmonic pulses. As soon as the vibrations stopped, everything on the ship shut down. The lights and water turned off and the ship went dead silent. The only sound that could be heard was the remaining water running down the drain, and water dripping on the tile floor from the shower head she was just using. Not even the usual hum of the engines could be heard. She stumbled over to the emergency box and grabbed a flashlight, clicked it on, and walked over to the towel dispenser. It was completely unresponsive to any input commands. “Of course.” the captain mumbled. She tried the clothing sanitation hatch and the clothing dispenser next with the same result. Letting out an exaggerated sigh, she grumbled, “Well this is going to be embarrassing.” She walked over to the door override and cranked the door open a couple of feet. Sticking her head out between the panels, the corridors were empty and dark. The only visible light was coming from the spaced emergency lights, and flickered occasionally. Satisfied that the hallway was clear, she scurried out of the shower room and made her way to her quarters. She made it a couple of paces when she heard some muffled clacking. Stopping in her tracks, she tried to put a reasoning to the sound. It was random and coming from multiple directions. Dismissing it as some of the ship’s systems trying to come back online, she continued to her room. Reaching her door, she grabbed the override handle and froze again. The clacking was now a lot closer, behind her in fact. No longer able to dismiss it as something going on with the ship, her heart began to race as the fear in her started to grow.
