Xena grabbed both of Beth’s hands and jerked her grip loose. The jolt broke Beth’s trance on the ground and she finally made eye contact with Xena. This helped her to relax a little bit, and Xena held her hands in a stable fall position. Jim was now able to move his body and got to work. Transferring to an inverted fall beneath Beth, he moved her limbs one by one into the chute straps. A small bit of relief blanketed over him as the last clasp sprung home. Xena moved Beth’s right hand to the back of her head, and Beth quickly caught on to take a hand hold. Moving her mouth as close as possible to Beth’s ear, Xena shouted instructions on what she needed to do with her left hand and legs to keep the stable fall. Beth started to perform as instructed, which confirmed to Xena that she was heard through the intense barrage of the wind. Meanwhile, Jim was encountering another problem. This parachute was never intended for free fall deployment. To make matters worse, it wasn’t intended for use at all. All of the straps had been sown down to the fabric to prevent inadvertent release. “They steal this damn thing from a museum?!” Jim gnarled to himself. He tugged with all his might at the actuation strap, hoping to tear the threads free. As he struggled, the three bodies broke through the final layer of clouds. Time was quickly running out.
