On 8 July 1947, Roswell, New Mexico was put on the map. Now, after all these years, after all the sidestepping, after all the tap dancing, it seems there was an alien spacecraft and there was something inside of it.
Eric Allen Daniels was a U.S. Navy Fighter pilot. He was a young officer who many said had stars in his future until he was court martialed, for murder, conduct unbecoming an officer, and disobeying a direct order.
While stationed aboard the U.S. Navy Aircraft Carrier, the USS Barack Obama, and on duty in the South China Sea, the USS Obama received a radio transmission from the Japanese Ministry of Defense regarding a Chinese fishing vessel in their waters. They said, they were picking up cryptic radio messages which indicated possible spy activity.
The USS Obama dispatched two F-18F Hornets and a 2 Seahawk helicopters carrying members of a Navy SeAL team. As they drew closer one of the Seahawks radioed they were being locked on and tracked by a surface to air missile system. They advised that they were unable to shake it, Lieutenant Junior Grade Daniels fearing the worse, swung his F-18F Hornet around and let loose with two AGM-154 JSOW air-to-surface missiles sending the Chinese vessel to the bottom of the Sea of Japan. The targeted helicopter then stated the signal had stopped.
Hostilities already existed between China and the US and had now grown worse. The two countries were on the verge of going to war. China maintained that boat was nothing more than a commercial fishing vessel and that the US had murdered 23 Chinese citizens. They demanded the UN take action. People in the US began to side with China. They demanded that President Andrew Martin be impeached. The Chinese demanded the US hand over the pilot responsible for the sinking of the fishing vessel to be tried in their courts. The US declined to acquiesce to the Chinese. Instead, amid growing pressure, the US Navy arrested Lt JG Daniels and charged him with 23 counts of murder, disobeying a direct order, and conduct unbecoming a US Naval officer. He was court-martialed, found guilty on all charges, stripped of all duties and rank, and sentenced to Ft. Leavenworth. After serving one year, he was released. He moved to Declinberg, Rhode Island where he was living alone and in seclusion.
During the time of the "Daniels Incident," the CIA had commissioned a shadow military contractor, Aries International, to produce a flight suit. The suit dubbed the Lancer was based on decades of scientific research on the suit the alien bodies were wearing in the Roswell crash. After decades of reverse engineering, it had finally been duplicated and was determined to be the weapon that would alter the way wars would be fought and it was soon to be in the US inventory. The lead project manager was Dr. Charles Toffee.
Toffee had a problem that began to surface. He loved to rape, and torture women and the occasional 12-year-old child. The FBI was investigating the case and were closing in. Dr. Toffee felt the walls closing in and stepped up the production of the suit. When the suit was ready, 6 months ahead of time, Dr. Toffee said he was the one who was going to test it. The FBI arrived to serve their arrest warrant when Dr. Toffee began the test. When the FBI entered the test facilities, Dr. Toffee issued a disintegrating plasmic charge that disintegrated the FBI team. he blew a hole in the ceiling and flew off. He landed in China and offered the suit and his knowledge to China in exchange for protection from the US Government.
Before China accepted the gracious offer, they demanded a test. Two days later, Dr. Toffee donned the suit and sunk the US Naval Destroyer the USS Donald C. Winter. There were no survivors. In an effort to deter the now impending war, the CIA intervened and promised to end it all before it happened. In secrecy, they knew they could not let the knowledge of the suit become public knowledge. They, especially, knew they could not let the suit fall into the hands of another country, especially, the Chinese. They began planning an off the books, covert operation. They knew the suit's capability and they needed a pilot. They needed an experienced pilot but they could not use active military. The first person on everyone's mind was Eric Daniels.
The case, Code Named: Black Winter, is given to CIA Agent, Fiona Chang. Fiona is a first generation American, the daughter of Chinese immigrants. Fiona makes contact with Eric, who by this time is given to heavy drinking and in his most lucid moments is prone to suicidal thoughts. Over the course of three days she is able to convince him to join her.
The two arrive in China by way of the US Navy's Nuclear Powered Submarine, the USS Baton Rouge. They track down Dr. Toffee who manages to capture Agent Chan and brutally tortures her and kills her before Eric can catch up to them. Eric eventually kills Dr. Toffee by using the suit to disintegrate him. He takes the suit back home and after realizing its full power, he refuses to turn it over for fear for what the US Government might do with it and so he absconds with it.
Eric Daniels is basically a wanted man. But the CIA enters into an uneasy truce with him. In spite of this, they want their suit back.
