Hey guys! Here's some things to keep in mind while applying and designing your character to increase your chance of being accepted.

  • We do pay attention to gender balance within weapons/meisters. Try to create a character with a gender of the minority- It'll improve the chance that you'll get accepted. While you won't be punished for not doing this, just know people that create a character with whatever gender the minority is will be prioritized over you. Right now we need more females as both weapons and meisters.

  • There are more character archetypes than "The Loudmouth" and "The Shy One." I understand these are very popular and easy to create because they are near opposites and can be used easily for a Weapon/Meister combo- But there's far, far more options. Think of Death the Kid and his weapons. Kid isn't shy or a loudmouth, just serious with his weird symmetry quirk. Liz isn't shy or a loudmouth either, she loves fashion and is usually the most level-headed one. Patty may fit the archetype of a loudmouth, but generally she's just silly and acts as comedic relief.
Even Soul and Maka don't fit this archetype- Maka isn't shy, she's just studious and friendly. Soul isn't a loudmouth, he can have his bold moments but usually he's cool and collected.
There's a whole bunch of resonance-friendly opposite archetypes, and I recommend you check out the wiki on emotions , or look at the Character Tropes page on TV tropes for some unique ideas.

  • Characters with a personality too similar to an already accepted character will be declined. That's right- In a way, personality is on a first come first serve basis. This is to keep the population of the group interesting.

  • Characters whose aesthetic seem too outlandish will be declined. This doesn't mean you shouldn't take risks- It's just, there's designs that just look like there's no way they'd be in Death Hunters. It's kind of like the common illustration tactic- If there are two very different subjects in a piece (A little girl + a gun) it can make the piece interesting. If the two subjects deviate in theme TOO much (Dumbledore with an assault rifle), the character ends up looking too comedic and out of place. So basically- Take risks, but don't just completely abolish the design principal.

  • Having a cruel or unusual backstory for shock factor will probably get you declined. All our characters are coming in as equals- That means, don't try to set your character above the rest by having them "lose their parents to a very powerful witch, they engage in a fight with her and win but she gets away, vow to become a Death Hunter to avenge them" kind of deal. We allow sad pasts and unique stories, of course, but there is a very fine line between "This helps the characterization" and "I thought it would be cool and make my character a badass so I put it in."

  • Tattoos, deformities, ect are allowed to a degree. The rule that states that they are not allowed means, "Don't use this to make your character better than the other characters." Ex; Don't make them lose a limb and have it replaced with a hand cannon, don't let them have tattoos from some kind of yakuza clan they once worked for, don't let them have a scar from a battle with Jack the Ripper that they barely survived, ect.

  • Character designs should remain interesting while still looking like they could fit into a Soul Eater universe. Even if your character has reasons for outlandish dress, they still need to look like part of the group. No- This isn't me telling you to make all characters look like cookie-cutter templates, in fact characters that look too similar to a pre-existing character will be declined. It's just that it's possible to give a character an "outlandish" outfit while matching the group's aesthetic.

  • Grimoire Academy is not a "rehabilitation" academy, or a place where "problem students" are sent to. We've been getting TOO many applications where people are sent to Grimoire as a punishment or for them to learn how to cope with their weapon/meister talents. This is not what the school is about- The school is one of the last Weapon/Meister schools around because it's been able to retain a prestigious name. Some people coming to cope with their powers is fine, but it shouldn't be the majority. GA would most likely kick out problematic or dangerous students to retain it's record.

  • We have been getting a lot of stereotypical characters. We understand this happens because there's sort of molds people shift to when creating a character because it's more comfortable and well known- But we're asking you to move away from that. As we become stricter and stricter with the quality rate and begin declining more applications, it becomes more important for you to have a unique character that makes us go "Huh. We haven't seen this before." Please check out this very helpful character development and creation masterlist for help with making unique characters.

  • Applying as a partner duo does not insure your acceptance. We treat partners applications individually, and it is entirely possible your partner will be rejected. When applying, keep this is mind. If your partner does get rejected, you are allowed to app in as a solo character instead.

  • Please look at the current ratio of weapons/meisters. We will reject solely on the count of "theres too many accepted applicants", even if your application is outstanding.

  • I don't care if your application is amazing- If you're rude to me or the mods, we will reject you. Accepted members spend tons of time together, so of course we have to like you and want to spend time around you. If you are snappy to me when I'm critiquing your application or during anything else, I'll just reject you. Simple as that.

  • Please PLEASE make sure you have the time to dedicate to the group if you're applying as a solo app (to be paired with someone), if you come in already with a pair I assume you two will do your own thing and determine your own activity, but if you app in individually you have an expectation to be active for the sake of your partner. If you disappear for a while and we try to contact you and get no response, we assume you're not coming back and your partner will be assigned to someone else and your character will be put on a hiatus.

  • Just a few things to keep in mind. Good luck everyone!
