Actually, that's not completely true. While the jelly may have some influence, another reason for this phenomenon lies in the usual heights of our tables.
A toast falling from a normal table only has enough time to turn 180° before reaching the ground, thus landing with the jelly side down. If our tables were higher, it would have enough time for a 360° turn and always land with the jelly side up. As far as I can remember, there's an episode of Mythbusters where they prove it.
