Description The most recently concluded Kevin & Kell arc concerned a college play of The Lion King, with Rudy Dewclaw (a small wolf) cast as Simba and Fiona (his girlfriend, a red fox with fennec-size ears) cast as Nala. Since Bill Holbrook did not want to risk a Disney lawsuit, we never got to see anyone in costume or reenacting any scene. I offered to rectify this with fanart. After all, Disney never came after me for my Pixar crossovers:

My first thought was that the K&K actors would try to look "wild" -- i.e., naked and on all fours, just like in the movie. Their world does have a nudity taboo, but it's more relaxed than ours. Besides, another Disney movie, Zootopia, gave us the precedent of young anthropomorphic animals on stage wearing suits that made them look naked. Nevertheless, it just didn't seem appropriate to me, not least for the otherwise adorable "Pinned ya!" moment depicted herein.

Then I realized that the TLK lions aren't entirely "wild" by K&K standards anyway. Maybe in their world, the story has them acting more like African humans. That's when I remembered the Broadway production, with its more abstract renditions clearly involving clothes and paints. I looked up the official costumes and...hoo boy. What you see here is a simplification.

My plan has been to do a follow-up drawing with the two of them playing grown-up Simba and Nala, a director's decision that stunned Rudy in the comic. After all this trouble, I'm less certain I want to go through with it, but it should be a little easier.

It's unusual to see Rudy without his shades or Fiona without her glasses, but the play may be trying for some level of authenticity. Rudy keeps his signature hat on only until the second act, when he reveals hair long enough to pass for a mane. And you can probably guess why Fiona's lion tail is so thick until a certain point.
