“Not the boy!”

The command rang out into the late night courtyard, echoing behind the flash of light between the maze of well trimmed bushes.

~~~~~~~~~~~
It was a normal night, how different could Starry have expected it to be? After his last study and dinner he’d trot off to the garden, hooves meeting stone pathways, Starry Night would greet the statues one by one. Most being generic art pieces of various ponies in different poses, he never stayed to talk at them for long. No, the one he found the most intrigue in was near the center of the garden, three different creatures clambering over one another as if trying to escape their marbled fate.
“Good evening, Mister Tirek, Miss Chrysalis, Cozy Glow.” The small colt's voice came first before he even rounded the corner to rest beside the foot of the statue.
‘Not this thing again…I’d rather listen to the buzzards than his trap.’ Chrysalis’ voice came up in the silent void around them, the bitterness clearly coloring what limited ability the three of them had in perceiving the outside world. Following her was the still strong presence of Tirek, the centaur would never say it- but they knew he had grown fond of the young prince’s excited speeches of his studies or whatever stories he had read that week. There was something calming, naive and gentle, in Starry’s wake. Not unlike his brother he had scorned ages ago. ‘Silence, Chrysalis, I wish to hear him.’ His voice mumbled.
Silence fell yet again in the void as Tirek listened to Starry ramble along, speaking back- even if the young prince couldn’t  hear him.
Time flies, the moonless night is brightened by the stars alone. And perhaps it was the prince’s alicorn heritage that had brought back their consciences as far as it had from the brink of nothingness. Perhaps it was just the fate of things, but that night as the stories drew to a close and it became too cold for the colt to stay much longer- it all began.
Chrysalis, stuck hearing what she felt was a terrible droning of the child, thought of how if only she could hurt Twilight back. The spite and vitriol could bubble and curl her venom if she still had it. The changeling queen felt the first instances of her life line being pulled at, awoken from that stoney slumber. The shock was the first thing she could truly register before realizing this chance was the first one she’s had in years to truly be free, away from the ramblings of that child she wanted gone, away from the pitiful remains of the lunatics who dragged her down, she wouldn’t miss it. Tirek noticed it after, as Starry Night said his weekly farewell, he felt the last surge and remnants of magic in his veins warm them again. Starry didn’t notice it until he saw the sparks of pinks and golds scatter like embers of magic from behind, spurring past his hooves before burning out. The young colt spun around, stumbling and falling back  when he witnessed the emaciated forms of the entrapped villains regaining their colors, stone shell dissolving like it was nothing.
Tirek’s weak legs stumbled off the pedestal, buckling the few steps it took to kneel beside the prince. “It’s okay-” His voice was like the rumble of thunder, hoarse from not having been used in years, but it was interrupted by the sheer cackle and buzzing of wings unfettered by agate.
“Enough.” Demanded the bug-like queen behind them, the worn filly slung over her shoulder not even noticed by her as Chrysalis’ body slowly slipped from lengths and shapes. What little magic left in her was doing its best to retain her shape. “I finally have a chance to show you ponies what your little eutopia will cost you!” She hissed, blind rage in the gaze she shot down at Starry Night. None of them could hear the trot of guards, alerted from the distance by the clash in the scenery.
There was not much energy in either of their bodies, nor much magical will. But what Chrysalis had she used- sparking a rather poisonous looking ball from the pit of her throat before she spit it at the small colt and Tirek. Two birds with one magic spell in her eyes.
“Not the boy!”
The command rang out into the late night courtyard, echoing behind the flash of light between the maze of well trimmed bushes. Tirek’s thin arm came up as a smolder of a burning star flickered between his horns and he used the last ounces of his magic to shield the prince and himself. All Starry could do was huddle under the protection of Tirek as the magic scattered off each other like a dazzling array of rage between two monsters. It wasn’t worth getting caught again, so Chrysalis took the last second before any unicorns rounded the corner to escape through a portal off to somewhere else in Equestria. Leaving Tirek there, carefully coddling the colt into his side until the guards would bound across the stone to them, giving himself to them as soon as he was able to give Starry to his father.
He didn’t hear much as he was carefully ushered to be imprisoned again, watching the hushed whispers of the pegasi together.
“Thank you…” Came a pathetic and teary voice, shaken, Starry was looking to Tirek with a bit of wonder. The guards stopped their march, allowing the centaur to meet his gaze with a soft one.
“Of course, young prince, see to it you sleep well after all those stories you told tonight.”
