Description
With his shirt off, I could see every muscle in his torso; defined, shapes, perfect. He looked at me, his eyes betraying the saddest expression I've seen on him, and the salty wind blew his short brown hair like it did to the waves far below.I approached him, my white dress getting caught in the wind behind me as sea spray found its way to my face. I yelled over the crashing waves to him, "David, give it to me!"
He fingered the charm that lay so perfectly on his sternum. The look he gave me was somewhere between willingness and fear. Fear to let go.
Before he could do anything, I ripped the chain from around his neck and walked away. He didn't call out or try to stop me as I made my way to the stone wall that overlooked the sea and tossed his charm into the angry waters below. The fall seemed to take forever, but I saw the slight white-water once the waves accepted the token.
I made my way back to him, and, as I got closer, I could see the small Phoenix tattoo that had been hiding under his necklace. A sign of rebirth. I threw my small arms around him and he returned the embrace, bringing me in close. His scent filled me as I placed my cheek against his bare chest. I ran my hands along his muscular back and arms as I whispered, "I don't want to lose you."
"You won't." He assured me.
We stood there for who knows how long, the wind whipping my curls, neither one of us wanting to let go. Things were going to change.
