The shotrings rings rings
in my ears.
I barely feel
the kick on my shoulder.
Daddy is smiling at me
and congratulating me.
We’re both crying.
We pray:
“Thank you God.”
I pray:
“Please forgive me.”
I o p e n my eyes.
I’m smiling too.
Giddy.
Grubby
white antlers.
Soft-looking brown fur.
Stubby tail,
brown on one side
white on the other.
It’s beautiful.

I have just killed my first buck
and there’s no explaining
the excitement I feel.
