Description
It was as the gateway started to open that the first hellhound made its move. It charged forth with a growl which incited the others to action. It ran straight for Providence like a night carnivore about to corner its prey. As it neared Providence, the tall man splayed out his hand and with it, a strong gust of wind slammed against the hellhound.
The first hellhound was sent reeling back, almost colliding with a second hellhound who dodged to the side before closing the distance between it and Providence. With a howl of victory it leapt at Providence, its massive maw ready to rend and tear.
Providence tracked the beast’s movement and as it was about to collide into him, he braced himself and raised his right arm. A shield of glowing red light materialized on his arm and it was upon it that the hellhound slammed into. Providence grunted as he held the weight of the beast aloft. As the beast tried to snap and claw at him, Providence lifted his cane with his left arm and pointed it straight at the beast’s flaming core. In one swift motion, Providence thrust the cane forwards, and as he did, the wooden sheathe dissolved into shadows revealing a gleaming crimson blade within.
The red blade plunged into the hellhound and it howled as tendrils of light spilled from the entry wound. The hellhound writhed and recoiled, trying to escape the blade. But Providence didn’t give it the chance as he drove the blade home. The hellhound let loose one final cry before it exploded in a flash of bale fire.
As the hellhounds' dying howl echoed throughout the cavern, Providence spared a glance at Octavia and said, “Aim for the center of their chests, where the core resides.”
Another hellhound that was just in the process of pouncing at Octavia found its head snapping to the side as a bullet impacted it. Before a split second could even pass, Octavia leveled her revolver and fired two more shots into it, both finding their mark in the creature’s chest.
As the hellhound combusted into bale fire, its dying howl seemed to drive the remaining hellhounds into a frenzy. They moved faster as Providence and Octavia attempted to keep them at bay with bullets and spells.
As their attention was preoccupied, a lone hellhound managed to clamber up on one of the support columns and with a snarl it leapt at the area between Providence and Octavia. Octavia saw the creature’s form the corner of her eyes before managing to yell, “Providence, move!”
Leaping away from each other, Octavia and Providence managed to avoid the beast as it landed on the area where they had just been standing. Octavia’s eyes narrowed as she eyed the hellhound, understanding what it had intended and succeeded in doing. The other hellhounds moved to build a barrier between her and Providence, effectively cutting them off from each other.
“Clever girl,” Octavia muttered.
Her thoughts were interrupted as another hellhound jumped at her. Cursing, she sidestepped, letting the beast pass by before she planted a firm kick into its side, following it up with a shot from her revolver.
Her attention drifted to the gateway growing ever larger and she knew that time was running out. It was imperative to close it before anything could crossover and she knew it was Providence who knew of a way to seal it.
Her eyes drifted to Providence, the tall man holding his own against a great number of hellhounds. For a brief moment their eyes met and Providence yelled out, “Detective, behind you!”
Octavia tried to turn and raise her gun to the hellhound that had emerged from the darkness and was mid jump. But before she could pull the trigger, another hellhound charged from the side and managed to swipe at her gun, sending it skittering away.
Octavia cursed and punched the hellhound in the snout before leaping clear of the second one’s trajectory. Momentarily clear but missing her gun, Octavia watched as three hellhounds closed in on her. She could see Providence trying to cut his way to reach her, but their numbers were effective in slowing him down.
She returned her focus to the three hellhounds in front of her, a grin appearing on her lips.
“Come on then you burnt up mutts! Who gets to die first?” she yelled in challenge.
The hellhounds snarled and as one, charged at her.
Potential death was approaching her, with their mouths ablaze and claws outstretched. But it was in that moment that Octavia took a deep and calming breath. She raised her right arm to her side and as she exhaled she whispered,
In Nomine Dei
And as the words left her mouth, the tattoo in her arm blazed to light and radiant light burst forth from her raised hand.
