Description
It took Cain five minutes to cross reference the past and current map of New Luxerion before managing to pinpoint the location of the abandoned train station and passing it along to Octavia. Half an hour later of driving north, Octavia and Providence reached their destination just outside of New Luxerion. Parking her car underneath the shade of a tree, Octavia and Providence looked ahead at what was most certainly the lead they were looking for.It certainly looked like an abandoned tunnel entrance. A safety perimeter had been positioned around it. However, its purpose to keep people out was no longer in effect as Octavia noted the two fence posts that were deliberately knocked down. Under the light of the moon, Octavia could see deep tire tracks on the ground leading towards the tunnel where a sizable entrance had been broken into the wall that once blocked the tunnel.
Octavia felt the ethereal pull once more, beckoning her towards the tunnel. However, there was a sense of haste this time, telling her not to waste any more time. Providence turned to Octavia, before the latter nodded in wordless agreement and started walking towards the entrance.
As they reached the entrance, Octavia noted the pitch black darkness that lay within the entrance. Providence may have had the same thought as he raised his hand in front of him and whispered, “Lumen”. From his palm, light shone forth, banishing the dark ahead and giving them view of the path ahead. Octavia let out a slight grunt of approval before pushing ahead, Providence following close beside her. With the light provided by Providence, Octavia could see the same tire tracks leading further into the underground gloom, the same direction that the ethereal pull was coaxing Octavia to follow.
It was close to half an hour into following the tracks before Octavia and Providence reached the end of the tunnel. It was there that they came upon a rather sturdy looking pickup truck, one meant for hauling heavy objects and used for construction projects. Providence aimed the light from his palm to the side of the vehicle and spoke, “Detective Santori.”
Octavia followed the light to see what appeared to be another tunnel that branched out from the main one. Approaching it, a strong familiar scent reached the duo and Octavia couldn’t help but scrunch her face. Sulfur, just as Cain had told them as he read them the tunnel’s history. Ahead, Octavia could see dim light, one that did not originate from Providence’s hand.
Pausing for a moment, Providence faced Octavia slightly and spoke, “Ready yourself, detective. Something foul lies ahead.” He lowered his hand and as he did, the light emanating from it was extinguished. Cautiously, they moved forwards and the entire time they were doing so, Octavia could feel all her warning intuitions go into high alert. They got closer and the dim light grew brighter until the two found themselves entering a large cavern. At first glance, Octavia noted the wooden pillars acting as support columns as well as various machinery strewn about before her eyes traveled further and saw what lay at the end of the cavern.
A man was busy restraining what seemed to be a human sized body bag to a metallic table that had been propped upright. On closer inspection, Octavia noted that there were six in total, all of them held down upon metallic tables. But what truly drew her gaze was the altar and what was seemingly a large sculpture in the wall behind it that resembled a gateway.
A sudden sensation gripped Octavia and she quickly dodged to the side at the same time as Providence yelled “Ventus!”. A strong gust of wind emerged from Providence’s hand which in turn slammed into a large canine looking creature that had been about to tackle Octavia. The creature was sent flying ahead before it managed to land on its feet and recover. It regarded Octavia and Providence with a guttural snarl and the flames that emanated from it burned with bale fire. The hellhound positioned itself between them and the man up ahead, ready to attack at any time.
The man who had been busy only a few seconds ago looked up quickly at the sudden commotion and saw Octavia and Providence. He spoke and his voice was amplified by the cavern walls. “You’re not supposed to be here,” a manic tinge lacing his voice.
“Mister, neither are you,” Octavia barked back, as she readjusted herself and faced the man.
“You are making a dire mistake here,” Providence spoke, and this time, there was steel in his voice. “You do not have any inclination as to what you are about to dot”
The man laughed, a shrewd and frantic sound. “But I do… They told me my part… They spoke to me and understood me when no one else did..”
“Whatever promises or honeyed words they spoke to you, it is nothing more than an illusion. You do not know the dark tides that flow beneath the currents of their intent.” Providence responded.
The man spat towards Providence with disgust. “What do you know of what they want?! You haven’t spoken with them as I have. Not seen the greatness that they have to offer.”
“I know their promises, and it is nothing more than ash and dust” Providence spoke evenly.
The man sneered at them and walked back towards the altar, moving quickly behind it. “Three years, I have prepared for them. Three years I have toiled so they can make themselves known to this rotten world. And I am not letting you take that from me”
Octavia took a step forward and as she did, the hellhound in front of her let out a howl and as it did, the shadows in the cavern stirred. From the inky darkness, large lupine forms emerged, their eyes blazing with the same bale fire. Slowly, they formed a circle around Providence and Octavia, low growling sounds reverberating throughout the cavern.
“Crud,” Octavia found herself saying as Providence came to stand back to back with her.
The man at the altar raised a device in his hand and spoke, “You will not stop them.” He activated the device and as he did, the sounds of machine whirring to life could be heard at the same time that coiling tendrils of light emerged from those tied to the iron tables. Octavia could hear muffled screams as those same tendrils of light suddenly struck the massive gate behind the altar and as it did, a portal shining with otherworldly light started to form.
Their goal was made clear and Octavia found herself reaching into her coat to pull out her gun. Behind her, Providence held his cane and braced himself against the hellhound approaching from behind.
