I lied...thought of something...
When the pieces are all done and you have that open end from turning the pieces right side out and stuffing them (ie the legs, wings, fins etc) do you like to sew those open ends closed before stitching the parts to the body or leave them open?
Thanks!

I like to sew them before, because I'd like to have a finish and clean piece!

Lovely, thank you. The flat pieces like fins, yes, totally sew shut. I just wasn't sure about the rounded stuffed pieces like his legs and wings.

Haha okay, hopefully last question....I have all of his body parts made! I just need to connect them all together. This is done by hand I'm told. Do you use a back stitch to do this? I would like to connect the parts without the yucky raw edge or thread showing. It definitely gives it a cute, patchy, homemade look, but I'd like a cleaner more realistic look. Thanks!

You can sew with an invisible stitch by hand (www.youtube.com/watch?v=WbE5hX… ), or if you feel more professional, you can mark the area where the pieces connect and sew with the sewing machine. It's a little hard and long for little pieces (because you have to stuff the plush, pin the pieces, mark, unstuff everithing, sew, etc...)

Yes, I will keep trying. I have never used a sewing machine before so I am definitely learning....this probably wasn't the ideal project for me to learn with BUT it's turning out pretty neat and I'm having fun!
Haha yes, I have plenty of extra body parts.

May I ask, for his claws, did you create the feet and then sew them on by hand or were you able to use your machine?
He looks lovely. It's refreshing to see a Toothless plush with more accurate anatomical features and detail. Great work!

No biggie! Okay yes, I did a trial by hand and then a trial with the machine...was able to do booth but by hand was much cleaner/easier albeit it took more time.
I have been using my minky just to practice but I have some imitation leather to make the real claws. I have leather needles and such so hopefully they aren't insanely difficult to do/turn right side out. Did you use a leathery material and you made them by hand as well?
Thanks and no biggie, again your plush looks so nice. I am a fan of realism.

sewing by hand is always long, but it's the best for something more cleaner!
Faux leather it's a great fabric for claws, I usually sew the pieces together with my sewing machine and then sew by hand. If the fabric it's too thick, I use a pair of pincers for helping me with the needles!

I'm always scared my hand sewing isn't strong enough. I can usually give a fair tug and my work doesn't move but then after seeing how strong and tight my machine is, I can't help envy it/question my stitching.
I was able to create the claws with the machine and I will sew them on by hand. I have leather sewing needles so they should work great on this thin fake stuff. My regular sewing needle worked on machine (I didn't have to switch to my leather needle I purchased for my machine).
Good idea about pinches. I have a pair but hopefully I won't need them. We'll see I guess!
