It was a quiet afternoon, drowsy and warm with a breeze that lulled the mind. Though perhaps it was the fatigue instead, the kind of tiredness that lingers in one's bones after many days of laborious work. It could have also been the comfort of routine and trust of its reliability. Either way Oni found themself watching Dak trot across the field from the shady corner she trained in. The wooden sword familiar in their paws before being struck into the ground as they made off after him. It was curiosity or instinctual that they found themselves concealing the sound of their steps trailing after him. Their thoughts silent, observing, as Dak weaved through the halls unassuming or unknowing of the shadow that Oni became of him. Finally before a residential door Dak paused and sat a moment putting a paw against the bandage wrappings against his chest. A hesitation, before he reached to knock on the door. A muffled call from inside welcomed him before his paw fell to wood and he gave a soft smile dripping in warmth as he peeked his head inside and went in.

They could blame the wind or the fatigue, the comfort or his expression, but Oni found themselves standing in front of the cracked door with bated breath as the soft whispers of voices came from within.

“I come with a gift.”

“Of your injury?”

“Of my–”

Oni’s ears twitched eager for more, Dak’s voice was a deep rumble that came from his chest even more so now that he’s reached adulthood, a difficult one to hear least he wished to be. Was that why their chest felt heavy and tight? Sage could always understand him though. It was no mystery as to who he gave such expression when he entered. Her voice was silvery, addicting, befitting to the confident adult she grew into. Was that why their face was flushed with heat?

“Dak–”

They mutter back and forth. The sounds of shifting steps and creaking of a hammock.

“I give to you my oath and my life. All that I am and all that I will be, wholly and unquestioning, I swear it to you.”

A silence. The tightens in their chest suffocating as chills shook Oni’s body. They clawed at their chest, claws crushed against their maw least they let out a sound.

“I accept you; your oath, your phylakardia, all that you are and all that you will be, wholly and unquestioning, sworn to me.”

Oni felt their stomach drop and sour. Tears blurr their eyes, swell over and down their cheeks. Ice and fire ravaged their innerads till not but a gapping hollowness swallowed every ounce of being they were. The memories of them sawing at their heart strings in a pained melody. It was forlorn that only as they felt their soul shake with smothered sobs and shred under realization did they know that it was love they had felt.

Love.
