A finished costume design commission for @baobutt over on Twitter! This was a really exciting commission for me for several reasons: 1) this was the first time I've ever been commissioned for a cosplay design! 2) I REALLY LOVE MOTHRA!!
The client had ideas already, and I just expanded on them. Her inspiration was Q Bee from Darkstalkers, another series I'm familiar with. As I started coming up with the concept and incorporating elements that the client requested, I also thought of logistics for wearing the costume, and elements that would aid in that favor: a high collar leotard, and fur neck piece to help hide the wing harness, a belt for the bug legs and thorax. The more these elements came together, the more it started to resemble 80's super-hero costumes, which was a design turn I fully embraced.
The wings are odeled after the 2019 King of the Monsters Mothra, with a thorax modled more after her 1960's appearances. The belt "buckle" is meant to resemble her egg, which is also an important piece of Mothra's character and symbolism of life, sacrifice, and rebirth!
The client was so happy with how it turned out, and I am honestly SUPER excited to see what she does with it!!
