I agree with the other commenters that the first word that comes to mind when seeing this picture is "cute"... however, I do believe there is more to it than that.
This certainly looks like an onion, but am I entirely wrong to believe that it might be a bulb for a flower or plant? If that's the case, this piece is an interesting way of describing the way winter must be for a plant
Somehow this piece makes me think of when I was a little kid and had a cold, and my parents would cut an onion to pieces and leave it by my bedside at night to clear my nose.
