Description
You’ve seen me naked. You can say you haven’t, but you are probably lying. The night Jay Leno mentioned me in his monologue the server crashed three times. If you weren’t among the thousands of voyeurs who logged on, you tried later after your household was dark and quiet − long after your kids and spouse were asleep. Hell, they’ve probably seen me naked too.
Most people know about the strawberry birthmark on my inner thigh and the appendectomy scar on my stomach. Of course everyone knows about the tattoo: the falling blue jay with the broken wing that adorns the bicep of my left arm. Much has been made of that small tattoo. It’s been dissected to death in chat rooms and on blogs the length and breadth of cyberspace. Aficionados will tell you the bird isn’t there in my debut flick, and that I cannot possibly be the same man you see in later videos.
They are correct.
The tattoo was Lydia’s idea; “stage dressing” she called it. It was inked on with a much-hated needle before they shot RentBoy; if you look closely, the inflammation is still apparent on camera.
I am also not the same man. I’ve been changed in intimate ways. Unspeakable ways. I’m quite sure I will never be the same again.
Still insisting you haven’t peeked? Not even once? I will pretend to believe you. After all, you could have learned the sordid details in less-disturbing ways. There was the in-depth segment on Nightline, and the unauthorized bio in Maxim. Rolling Stone magazine ran an exclusive interview, but the questions were submitted by email and ghost-answered by Marcus. I was as surprised by my “traditional upbringing” as you were. The Wall Street Journal revealed a few titillating facts in a business profile. (Let it never be said those editors don’t know how to sell papers.) Even the Conservative Christian Right pulled back the covers a time or two while blasting me for corrupting American family values.
Everyone knows how to find me twenty-four hours a day, including Christmas. But no one knows where I am, or who I am. Gay men want to blow me. Straight men want to be me. Lonely women want to hold me. Strong women want to save me. Everyone wants a piece.
Lydia and Marcus own me.
I am the hottest thing on the Internet, and I will live forever. Or at least for as long as Marcus maintains the feed. In reality – which is the world I inhabit – I am a prisoner. I exist only for as long as I can hold your interest. For you, I am bound, gagged, tortured and pleasured. For you, I bind, gag, torture and pleasure others − and do it with apparent ease, with apparent willingness.
I have to. The day you stop watching, they will kill me.
You may get to see that too.
I am an international obsession, a catch phrase, and an icon. I am jon.com. And you are my lifeline.

just spreadin' the DA love. ^^
I'm also just a little bit pumped to see WRITING up as a DD. Seriously.
And congrats on finishing a novel! I'm working on one and I know it is no small feat. I'll definitely sign up so I know when it comes out!

You are so right on every count. There are few enough writers on dA as is, but they don't get much exposure. The new GMs appear to be trying to fix that.
Ah, writing a novel. What a pain, hm? If I had known when I tackled my first one that it would take soooo long and would even be tedious at times, I would have slammed the lid on my old Selectric and run for the hills. Since then I have completed two novels and started a third. But it has taken years! We have to be more than a little masochistic to actually enjoy doing this, eh?

oh definitely. Ever heard of NaNoWriMo?
50,000 words. One month. It was crazy.
And about the tedious thing, I think it comes and goes. Sometimes it's like pulling your own fingernails out, and sometimes you can't stop writing. XD
Anyway, congratulations on two novels finished!! I am very impressed. :3
I'm very happy to see more lit around here. I'd be honored if you'd take a peek at my gallery folder Revenants ([link] ), a set of short stories. I'd like to hear any feedback you have!
Happy writing!

Oh yes, I've heard. I always think I'll take a stab at it, but seem to be in the middle of some other project that I can't tear myself away from. I'm probably using that as an excuse to not try -- and therefore not fail.
I do want to get around to more galleries and sample some new writings. Will you do me a favor? Drop me a note reminding me to check out Revenants? That way I won't forget. It may take me a while, but I will get there.
PS - I read on an agent's blog that the typical newly published novelist has an average of FOUR novels under their bed by the time they finally get a contract for that first book. THAT is a scary thought.

This is really well-done. Reminds me of Chuck Palahniuk's writing, actually, and I don't think that's a bad thing. I'll definitely be looking for it once it's published.

You are the second person to say that. I am going to have to pick up some of his work. "Fight Club", right? Thanks for reading and commenting.

niedec In reply to denlm [2009-03-03 03:27:36 +0000 UTC]
Yes, he wrote Fight Club. This is probably a bit closer, though: [link] That pretty much sums up his writing style. It's from the first novel he wrote.
Just click the little "look inside" thing on the left, and you can read the first chapter for free.
Honestly, your book kind of sounds like his book Snuff, except yours is about 10 times better.
Thanks for writing, and keep it up.

Thank you so much. That really helped me see why deviants keep mentioning him to me when they read the prologue.
According to Wikipedia, C.P. likes to start novels with a prologue from the book's conclusion, then takes readers back to where it all started. And Snuff used the pornography industry as its hook. In that respect, we are similar. I do hope though that I am not writing "shock for shock's sake" as he has been accused of doing. I adore Fight Club and wouldn't mind being compared to him on that level, but I doubt I have much else in common with him.

niedec In reply to denlm [2009-03-04 15:28:05 +0000 UTC]
Well, actually, his goal is to write transgressive fiction, and he's even been known to call his books romantic. His philosophy is to use the bad to emphasize the good: "like swimming through a river of shit for a kiss." Of course, that still doesn't stop people from calling it shock-art, but that wasn't really his intent. Sadly, I have a feeling people might do that with your work, too. Anything even remotely controversial, and it's unavoidable. Still, those people aren't really using their brains.

You're right. I shouldn't make any blanket assumptions about his work until I read more of it. As I said, I love Fight Club. And, yes, I have come to expect controversy about jon.com. I even poke a bit of fun at the idea in the prologue with comments like "the Conservative Right" pulling back the covers a time or two, or the Wall Street Journal using controversy to sell papers.
Brains? People have brains? Wow, what an idea.

Your character has a compelling voice. The writing is so artful as to appear transparent.
All that is lacking for your work t be a page turner is the pages. Hopefully they will materialise soon.
