Description In regards to the portrayal of L by Keith Stanfield  in the upcoming Death Note Netflix film, I am not too concerned about the fact that he is being played by a black actor, despite the original incarnation of the character having pale skin. Although the other cases weren't related to racial reasons, one could address the controversy that originally surrounded Michael Keaton and Anthony Hopkins in their respective portrayals of the 1989 Batman and 1995 Nixon films, wherein their performances provided that, ability in acting often dominates actual appearance in certain roles.

Furthermore, the white characters of the upcoming film such as Light and Misa are also no longer Caucasian, just as L is no longer white, likely as a result of this adaption of the series being one of a more pragmatic variety, as evidenced cy the new cultural settings of American rather than Japan, and the changing of the major character's nationalities in the process.

Unlike the original manga and anime, plus Japanese movies, this depiction of the films will likely not stick as close to it's source material as the Japanese versions did, likely as to try and introduce some new concepts, rather than rehash the same eseries of events that we have seen been done countless times.

Regardless of whether he is no longer partially British and Japanese nor white, I will instead be critiquing Stanfield on his actual performance, rather than his racial origins, and therefore am excited to see how he does in depicting the character in his own way.

Plus Misa is no longer blonde and crazy, while Light looks like a stereotypical emo, so there's that. I hope that L looks scruffy as well though without his hood on. The trailer is also cliché too, with the constant use of the 'Inception' 'SHUN' throughout it.

Willam Dafoe looks good as Ryuk though. I can't wait to see him.
