The executioner finished stacking the rocks around the pike to help hold it inplace. It had been a good day. He had impaled dozens of witches in the small village. The trials took all morning, and he was able to complete the executions before sundown. He was sure to be awarded the Holy Cross of Service for all the work and a special blessing from the Bishop.

He stood up and stepped back to admire his work. It was a beautiful site. All those witches getting the justice they deserved. He enjoyed every minute of it. Particular Linda, the last witch and the most defiant one. She had been particularly difficult and even threatened revenge on him.

Standing there gazing at his handy work, he smiled at the beauty of Linda’s impalement. It was a masterpiece. The others didn’t compare in the skill of the pain and torture of the impalement. Maybe it was because of her defiance or her refusal to bow to the Bishop that inspired him. Whatever it was, it was his best and he was proud of it.

He heard a laugh, a demonic laugh that seemed to come from Linda. Looking at his masterpiece he saw her head turn to him and her eyes start to glow. Then she spoke and chill went down his spine, “That wasn’t very nice.”
