2015 PERSONAL GAME REVIEW: "HEROES OF THE STORM"
Play Time: 6 months
I had mixed feelings when I first started playing Heroes of the Storm (HotS) in 2015, but they soon turned into solid approval. Blizzard Entertainment brought popular characters from different games to fight and actually made it work for me. HotS is a competitive game where you team up with others to defeat an opposing team on a battlefield. You control a Hero, a character with unique abilities and the tool which you use to fight with in the match. As your team levels up, you can customize your Hero’s abilities to fit their needs and/or your style of play.
Although the art style looks like it’s meant for children, people in the 21st century should know by now that games and animation have never been restricted to just kids. Heroes of the Storm has violent and sexual aspects and is open to all ages who can think fast, multitask, be creative, have good hand-eye coordination, and work well with others under stressful conditions.Things I like about HotS are:
There are no armor, weapons, or miscellaneous items to buy during matches.
Matches usually take anywhere from 15-25 minutes to complete instead of 30-45 minutes with other MOBA (multiplayer online battle arena) games.
Players level up as a team instead of individually. This eliminates the chance of a single player becoming supremely overpowered early in the match.
While maps can’t be picked by players, there is a variety the game randomly chooses from and they’re all fun. Each map comes with mercenaries who assist the team that proves its strength. Also, a special map objective rewards the team which knows how to work well together.
For new players, the loading screen that appears before a match describes the map objective, how to complete it, and what the reward will be.
Some Heroes have the ability to ride mounts for faster travel across the battlefield. They can look like horses, tigers, magic carpets, and more.
Heroes verbally interact with each other (greetings, shows of gratitude, warnings, etc.) at the beginning of and during a match without the player having to do anything.
If you get disconnected, the game will either force your Hero to return to base where it will be safe or give it an artificial intelligence to fight in your absence.
In traditional Blizzard Entertainment fashion, harassing your hero with constant cursor pokes leads to entertaining dialogue.
Issues I had with HotS:
Not often, but sometimes the servers would cause players to badly lag or be kicked outright from a match. Then it’d take forever to reconnect them. This happened to me and some of my friends while our internet and PC’s were running perfectly fine.
The HUD is unsophisticated in matches and during playbacks compared to other MOBAs.
PERSONAL RATING: 8/10Very Good.
It’s enjoyable for both newcomers and veterans of MOBAs, but especially for newcomers. It heavily emphasizes teamwork because that's the only way a set of players is going to win in the game's play style.
