Description
OPN-series was used extensively in 90's in several gaming systems. YM2203 (OPN) PC-98; YM2608 (OPNA) PC-98; YM2610 (OPNB) NeoGeo; YM2612 (OPN2) Sega Megadrive. The capabilities were different, but the underlying FM-synthesis engine is the same. It has 4 Operators and 8 Algoritms.FM-X is Yamahas new FM-engine. With 8 Operators and 88 Algoritms it can do OPN and many other FM-synths (official DX7 importer exists).
In this image I have mapped OPN algoritms to FM-X.
_About the Layout_
Boxes are operators.
Bright coloured boxes are shared between OPN and FM-X.
Dark coloured boxes are only available in FM-X. *
Filled boxes are Carriers, Outlined boxes are Modulators.
Box with a loopring on it is operator with feedback.
Number of dots in the box is number of the operator (shared between OPN and FM-X) **
Below the layout there are two numbers.
FM-X tells which algoritm number You find the above algoritm.
OPN tells the OPN algorithm number (0-7).
* Set the levels to 0 to get the OPN algoritm. I only left them here to show the full algoritm in FM-X.
** The parameters on the operators can be assigned to assign knobs on Your MODX/MONTAGE. The number helps You tweak the proper parameter. As You see all OPN operators are in 1-4 range (since that's how many operators ONP had).
