Description ...and not the exception.
This is the antenna connector (the focus for this piece) on a TiVo unit for the Australian market.
You may know that F connectors are standard on satellite and cable boxes (except for a few of the very early Sky UK analog satellite boxes from around 1989 which had a PAL connector for the satellite input) and in the US, terrestrial TV receivers as well.
Belling-Lee, the inventor of the PAL connector, advised that this connector was only designed for radio signals and not intended for TV use; many manufacturers did not heed this advice, as this connector can be unreliable at TV frequencies.
When we got our house built some time back, we asked for F connectors for all items on the TV signal reticulation system including both sides of wallplates (no PAL connectors whatsoever!) - the end result was a reliable signal at each receiver (other than weather disturbances).
Considering this, I think F connectors (not PAL connectors) should be standard on terrestrial TV receivers, with a notable exception being handheld receivers which would have smaller antenna/RF connectors.
