Description
Eto Demerzel (R. Daneel Olivaw) and Emperor Сleon I.CLEON I — The last Galactic Emperor of the Entun Dyntasy. He was born in the year 11988 GE, the same year in which Hari Seldon was born.
Having succeeded to the Imperial throne in 12010 GE at the age of twenty-two, Cleon I's reign represented a curious interval of quiet in those troubled times. This is undoubtedly due to the skills of his Chief of Staff, Eto Demerzel, who so carefully obscured himself from public record that little is known about him.
-Encyclopedia Galactica
Cleon I is a character in Isaac Asimov's Foundation series.
Eto Demerzel was just one of the many alter-egos of R. Daneel Olivaw. As Demerzel, Daneel was able to be the original First Minister to the emperor Cleon I. As the first minister, Daneel was able to manipulate certain events to his benefit, such as his first meeting with Hari Seldon under the guise of a trantorian reporter named Chetter Hummin (a play on the word human), therefore establishing a friendship with him, and essentially forcing Seldon to continue forward with psychohistory. Demerzel/Daneel, with the help of Seldon and his foster son Raych Seldon, was able to thwart the first Joranumite conspiracy. Following his resignation from his post, Demerzel was never seen again until Hari Seldon's Funeral in the year 12,069 G.E., or 1 F.E.
Based on an independent timeline, Daneel was 19,230 years old during the events of Foundation and Earth. Daneel is the longest-living Asimov character, as well as the longest living humanoid robot in that universe (being the first humanoid robot created). He is theoretically immortal, because he is a robot. However, his parts need replacing, including his brain, and he eventually has to use a biological brain, as his own becomes more complex each time he replaces it. Daneel mentions that the more complex his brains become, the more fragile they are. At the end of the book, he intends fusing his brain with that of a Solarian hermaphrodite, as it has reached the point where an upgrade is no longer possible. Daneel's original brain had lasted 10,000 years, approximately half his lifetime. In contrast, his final brain, which was thousands of times more advanced than his first, showed signs of shutting down after only 600 years.
***
There was a close and dependent relationship between Demerzel and Cleon, the emperor realized that he was nothing without Demerzel, he was dependent on him and had mixed feelings to him.
Interestingly, Asimov was inspired by Byzantine history. The mysterious image of Demerzel - a character without a family and a past, who was a powerful shadow ruler, whom everyone hates because he is "not a human" exactly reflects the situation of powerful eunuchs at the court of the Byzantine emperors, eunuchs who were hated because they were "not men", with a mysterious past and without clan, who rule the entire empire from the shadows and comparable to sexless angels.
