Altruism - an act in which an animal sacrifices its own well-being for the benefit of another animal.Humpback whales are known for their selfless behaviour of protecting their calves and other marine animals (such as seals, sea lions, porpoises) from orcas. They are capable of sophisticated thinking, decision-making, problem-solving and communication, which means they have a highly developed degree of intelligence capable of empathy. A full grown humpback whale (about 16m) can take on an entire pod of orcas.
