Description Secret Squirrel cartoon character - fan art.

It's not secret that this little squirrel is still bringing smiles to children. He was a favorite of mine as a child...say a few years back.

When SketchClub had a composition challenge for favorite cartoon character I couldn't pass this guy up.

Sketching the the coat took me a few tries. Outlining was first, and the arms came later.

Above the coat, the head was next, even though it appears under the hat. I had drawn the bottom line of the hat to frame the head.

Drawing the hat was tougher than I'd have thought. Simple lines right? Not so much. Again it's about getting the proporations and angles close. The hat in the cartoons is dang consistent. A rule would have helped here.

Curling the tail was the next and biggest challenge. Let's not talk about how many times I tried for curving tail that didn't look like a limp or freaky feather.

Coloring was the easiest part. Using layers always makes that work easier.

If you're going to drawn Secret Squirrel take time for the smile. I tried to emulate an original screen shot from the cartoon. It really sells the image as much as the body work.

Who's your favorite old time cartoon? Was it a female character? A goofy alien?
