Description
Miriam awoke violently, gasping for breath and wild eyed as she attempted to orient herself. She lay on a small cot; the air smelled of blood and bleach. She scanned the tent as her breathing calmed. Crosses shone crimson against the white canvas, declaring this the hospital tent and confirmed her first guess from the smell.A medic, noticing her wakened state, trotted over and began checking her vitals. He seemed exceedingly familiar, but Miriam's slow mind wasn't processing fast enough to make any connections. His coat was a vivid red. The probability that he was from Kanto was high. No Jay would wear anything that red near a prisoner of war, right?
She let out a relieved chuckle, realizing her good fortune at not being captured by Johto. "You're one of the best things I've ever woken up to," she croaked. She coughed lightly, yearning for a glass of water. It felt like someone had taken steel wool to her throat and went to town.
The man cocked an eyebrow. "You're lucky to be alive at all. You were in the tower when it collapsed. You have some pretty serious burns and the doctor had to treat you for smoke inhalation, not to mention that you'd been poisoned. Your right arm took the brunt of the poison's damage, so it'll be weakened for quite awhile. The only reason you survived was most likely the ampoule of antidote you had in your hand and your kirlia."
Miriam twitched, hissing as the burns he had mentioned rubbed against the bedding. "Bennie?" she got out when the pain subsided somewhat. Shit. The burns were going to hurt for a long time. "Where is he? Is he okay?"
The medic picked up a pokéball from the floor next to her cot and placed it in her reaching hands. "He should be fine. He had a broken arm that was fixed easily enough. Your other Pokémon are next to your bed. The EMP is down, so you can release them, but remember that this is a medical tent."
"Gee, doc, I never would have guessed," she deadpanned, giving him a flat look. Her lips curved into a small smile when he shook his head at her.
A pained moan brought his head up and he moved off to tend to a patient further down the tent.
Sitting up, she swore quietly as her back screamed in protest. 'Okay. So, burns don't like stretching.' She flexed her right arm and quickly braced herself as black spots rippled before her eyes. 'And I won't be swinging swords anytime soon.'
Using her left hand and bracing the ball between her knees, the pilot clumsily released her partner from the container.
Something in her cracked and tears gathered at the corners of her eyes.
Miriam snatched the kirlia off his feet, crushing him to her chest. Tears leaked out of the corner of her eyes.
he said, He heaved a sigh and wrapped his arms around her as best he could.
He paused and listened to her mind babble, shamelessly eavesdropping on her thoughts.
She gave a soft chuckle and wiped away the tears.
Awkwardly patting her on the back, Bennie pulled out of her embrace.
Miriam smiled and patted his head. She didn't know what she would do without him. 'Probably go crazy and jump out of my plane. Wonder if I can fly with only one arm?' She brushed her concerns off and spent the rest of the afternoon chatting with the one being left in the war that she felt she could trust.

I wouldn't say it's too dramatic. Some of it is maybe rich compared to the content, but you're safely outside of the drama queen realm.
And I could definitely see all this being a pain to draw out.
Whoo, character arc From hating pokemon to having an exception, ups investment considerably. Too bad you aren't meeting with success with other people, I'm sure there'd be potential for lots of stuff there.
Writing has its challenges, for sure.
