looks a lot like the Romulan Bird of Prey from "Balance of Terror" so they probly reused this design for that ship.

I love this design myself. It was Matt Jeffries original idea...but CBS said it would be too expensive to build...so they went with the "boxy" model we've all come to know.

I've never managed to decide whether I love or hate the shuttlecraft from the original series, but I have no reason to doubt when it comes to this one. Lovely ship.
