Gargamel is a medieval French alchemist who went rogue. Gargamel was studying under The Grand Order of Alchemists when rules regarding the creation of the homunculi (smurfs) and transmutation of gold forced him to leave the order and go into hiding. The Grand Order forbade the creation of female homunculi (smurfs) in fear that they would be able to reproduce and thereby upsetting the natural order of creation. By forbidding the creation of females, they felt that they could retain complete control over the creatures, and as a general precaution, over something they did not yet fully understand. Gargamel felt this was unnecessarily restrictive and felt that it was preventing them from progressing in there ability to transmute common elements into gold. Gargamel believed that the homunculi (smurfs) were the key to unlocking the powers of transmutation. He believed that the homunculi (smurfs) were the key ingredient in the creation of the philosopher's stone (a magical elixir used during the transmutation process). More specifically he believed that a male and a female homunculus were required in making of the elixir.
The Grand Order had made many male homunculi (smurfs), being that is required a living human sperm as one of the ingredients. To create a female required a living ovum. Something that was not easy to extract and isolate in medieval times. But despite the rules against it and the extreme difficulty to do it, Gargamel was able to create the female homunculus (Smurfette). But, before he was able to use her and a male homunculus (smurf) to create the philosopher stone elixir, he was found out by his fellow Alchemists. Gargamel was tried for his crimes against the Order and sentenced to exile but before leaving he was able to sabotage the containment area of the homunculi (smurfs) and most of them would later escape into the nearby forested region, eventually settling in and creating a small village (the Smurf Village) with the help of Papa Smurf (who was not originally among them). Gargamel would spend the rest of his days searching for the homunculi (smurfs) in the forest, eventually going mad, talking to his cat and obsessing over turning homunculi (smurfs) into gold or failing that, just eating them out of frustration and resentment as they came to serve as a reminder of his ultimate failure.
