Who knows, the companions you're hunting with might not be who they really are. It's not all the time they can find time to hunt with you. They might as well call someone else to stand for them if that's the case.
It should explain why we're slowly seeing layered armours that turn your character into NPCs. How this particular one is able to give human wearers four fingers is anyone's guess.
