Description Process for:

1. Planning (Photoshop)
  • The idea was to use the negative space to show the six spiders, with the Spider-Verse title in the center.
  • I started with a plain spider logo and cut it up to get a rough layout of the logo with extended legs.
  • I added a safe margin so that I'd know how long the legs needed to be.  This way I'd still have room for the spider webbing around the image, and be able to keep everything within the 15"x19" size.

2. Edited Spider Logo (Illustrator)
  • I haven't used Illustrator in a very long time.
  • Illustrator was used to make a cleaner version of the extended spider logo.

3. Spider Webbing (Painter)
  • Hand drawn webbing, and used it to block out the areas where the Spider-Verse title and characters will be.

4. Sketch (Painter)
  • I've recently made the switch from Photoshop to Painter for sketching.
  • I already had a clear idea of what I wanted each character's image to look like.

5. Lines (Painter)
  • After having worked on fan art for Spider-Gwen and Silk, doing spider suit webs feels really easy now.

6. Flats (Photoshop)
  • ... FLATS!... ¯\(°_o)/¯

7. Backgrounds (Photoshop)

  • Light work on the backgrounds just to set the general lighting and colors.

8. Rendering (Painter and Photoshop)

  • Spider-Man Noir: Very simple idea; out of focus city lights and that noir atmosphere.
  • Spider-Woman: I honestly prefer this new outfit of hers over her old one.  I went with a slightly muted/brown color palette because it's what I kept picturing when trying to come up with something for her.  I like how it turned out.
  • Miles Morales: Even though he's completely covered by his suit, I tried to make him look young.
  • Spider-Gwen: The same general pose from Rough Day (Spider-Gwen) , but completely opposite tone.
  • Spider-Man: "Web Brained" with small reference to the Venom symbiote.
  • Silk: This is based on the variant cover for Silk #1 by Stacy Lee.

Original working image size: 4500x5700 (15"x19")
