These are the newest class of warship being built for the British Royal Navy (BRN) as I write this (early 2021). The lead ship, HMS Glasgow, began construction in 2017 and is not expected to be completed until 2023, due both to the complexity of its internal systems and the effects of various external events, such as the impact on the dockyard of the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic in 2020-21. Also know as the Glasgow class in some sources from its lead ship, these have officially become known as the City class frigates, since every ship in the class will be named after a major British city (echoing the World War II era Towns and Counties class cruisers). The Type 26 came about as part of the BRN's Future Surface Combatant development program of the 1990s, which was geared toward developing a 21st century replacement for its current Type 22 (Broadsword) and Type 23 ("Duke" series) guided missile frigates. It had to compete with various other proposals at the time, such as the Global Corvette, and it eventually evolved into the multi-mission capable Global Combat Ship proposal of the 2010s. This was the design concept that HM government finally approved for construction as the Type 26. These will be comparable to the Franco-Italian FREMM program and the planned Constellation class guided missile frigates (formerly the FFGX program) of the United States Navy. This is another wonderful low poly but very good looking CG recreation by the talented Erwin Welker. My only gripe is that it's a waterline only model, but to be fair to him you don't need anything below the waterline for CFS2 due to the way it treats ship models. I have taken the liberty of increasing the size as much as I dared of the small slice of the hull he included below the waterline, so this wouldn't look so freaky to those of you to prefer full hull models. That is the only change I have made.
I'm upping this for two reasons. First, it makes for a very good looking placeholder until such time as I can get my hands on and port a higher poly full hull version that looks at least this good. Second, as Mr. Welker did with his original release, I wanted to give you something to escort his Queen Elizabeth class carrier model, so she wouldn't have to cruise alone. (grin).
This is not my model. All I did was port it for you and do the one small mod as described above. Please credit Erwin Welker if you use this in any of your 3D efforts. You do not have to credit me for my OBJ port.
