CSS Albermarle was one of the most feared shallow draft ironclad rams to see service with the short-lived Confederate States Navy (CSN) during the American Civil War (1862-1865). She was named for George Monck, Duke of Albermarle, one of the major English backers of the Carolina colony (modern-day North Carolina) in the Americas back in the pre-colonial days. Like the smaller Richmond class or type ironclad rams, Albermarle's basic design was derived from CSS Virginia (ex-USS Merrimac), the first such of its type, but with a number of refinements and improvements (such as a redesigned upper deck casemate) to make it more battleworthy - as you can see in the picture above. She was armed with two 6.4 inch (!) Brooke rifled cannon, one each fore and aft and on pivot carriages, and additional gunports were provided port and starboard in the topside casement so both would have a full 180 degree field of fire. These were powerful enough to handle an early form of armor-piercing round (!!) for use against Union ironclads and iron-shod warships, as well the available anti-personnel shells, standard grapeshot, "solids" (!!!), and other types of ordinance in that size. This made Albermarle a very powerful warship for her size and she was rightly feared by the Union Navy, which made destroying her one of their top priorities once they learned of her existence. Albermarle began operations on the Roanoke River in April of 1864 against Union forces operating there, escaped several attempts to trap her, and sank the union paddlewheel steamer Southfield during her very first battle. She cleared the river of Union forces and kept it clear until late that autumn, when a U.S. Navy team of volunteers led by Lt. William B. Cushing managed to sneak up on her in a small boat armed with a spar torpedo and successfully detonated it against her hull. The explosion destroyed the boat but Cushing and one of his crew successfully escaped, while eleven other survivors were later picked up and captured by Confederate patrols. Albermarle sank in six feet of water with a large hole blown in her hull below the waterline, and that marked the end of her short but quite notable career. Her two main guns were quickly salvaged by the Confederates for use in defending the nearby city of Plymouth. After the Civil War ended the U.S. Navy raised and repaired Albermarle with the intent of using her themselves if possible, but she was instead condemned by a U.S. prize court and sold for scrap two years later. Her main guns have survived the passage of time, as well as her main smokestack, and both are now museum displays. A 3/8th scale replica was constructed in 2002 and makes yearly passages of the Roanoke River from its "home port" of Plymouth, North Carolina (and that's from where all of those modern color photos of Albermarle come).
