Description
Ported to OBJ from the game stock model created by Mad Dog Studios for the Armada series (STA, STA1+STA2) of video games as well as Star Trek - Away Team (STAT). Certain additional elements regarding Incursion come from the feature film Star Trek: Insurrection (STI) and the video game Starfleet Command III (SFC3). Preview picture posed in XNAlara XPS. NO MODEL DOWNLOAD.
Incursion was a one-of-a-kind lone prototype from the so-called second wave of Federation starships that entered service during the TNG/DS9/VOY era. Many of these shared in common being very powerful starships for their size, large or small, and with most having non-standard and sometimes unusual hull forms that marked significant departures from previous Federation design practices. All of them in their own unique way were designed to fight the Borg as a sort of a "throwing mud against the wall and see how much of it sticks" kind of design approach; hence the great variations in size, hull form, mix of armaments, and so on -- even in warp drive types used in some cases. Most had either not finished construction or were in the finished prototype phase undergoing initial space trials when the first Borg cube arrived on the Federation border and instigated what later became known as the Borg Incursion (TNG "The Best of Both Worlds" Parts I and II). Almost a decade later a second Borg cube arrived, larger and more powerful than the first (the Star Trek: First Contact feature film), and this time managed to fight its way to Earth itself before being defeated in pitched battle with defending Starfleet forces in what later became known as the Battle of Sector 001. By that time a number of these second wave Federation starship classes had entered service and were present to fight the Borg on this second round, and their presence is generally credited with the somewhat better performance of Starfleet on this second go-round with the Borg.
Incursion was a spinoff from the Defiant project (see separate entry) that was reconfigured for use as a Federation stealth vessel. It had the same armament as Defiant and roughly the same inner layout but both of these were adapted to a reshaped and severely streamlined hull form. In addition somewhat more powerful warp engines were fitted to enable both Incursion's small scout class electronics suite and its holographic masking system, which allowed it to project a holographic field around the ship to make it appear it was something else. This masking was intended to be used in combination with a generated fake energy signature to further the illusion of being something else, or it could be used by itself without the signature as needed for those situations in which sophisticated scanning by others was not anticipated. The technical term was holocloaking and it was a natural refinement of early holoship technology, but with the intent of falsifying the outward appearance of Incursion both to the eye and to most scans as opposed to creating a holographic environment internally.
USS Incursion (NX-74808) had quite a storied career for her rather short service life, the details of which I will let you look up elsewhere. She was in active Starfleet service for only two years but in time was involved in more major incidents and stirred up more trouble with other major interstellar powers in its era that possibly any other single Starfleet vessel within a similar time span in this era. She was eventually decommissioned and scrapped within two years of being commissioned as part of a ban on holocloaking technology agreed upon by most of the known major interstellar powers at the time.
This is semi-canon, given its appearance in multiple Franchise licensed video games.
Live long and prosper.
TRIVIA - Incursion is sometimes treated as a highly specialized sub-class of the Defiant class in certain sources given her design origins and internal similarities.
ASIDE - Remember, Incursion is the lone ship of her class. You only ever get the one and you only have her for two years at most during the late TNG/DS9/VOY era, if you're abiding by the conditions under which she was originally created in her thread of the Trek multiverse. As for other threads, well .... -_^
