Description Ported to OBJ from the low poly model created by stuart277 for Microsoft's Combat Flight Simulator 2 (CFS2).  Preview picture posed in XNALara XPS.  NO MODEL DOWNLOAD.

Unryu (UN-ree-ooh) was the lead ship in a class of sixteen light carriers authorized for construction by the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) as part of its wartime carrier construction program.  Due to the reversal of Japan's fortunes starting with the battles of Coral Sea and Midway in 1942, and increasing wartime resource shortages on their part as the war continued, only three were completed by war's end:  Unryu, Amagi, and Katsuragi.  Another three (Kasagi, Aso, Ikoma) were never finished and were scrapped in their slips 1947-48.  Two more that were authorized but never named (Hulls No. 5002 and 5005) were cancelled so their gathered resources for building could be used for the conversion of the incomplete Yamato class battleship Shinano into a carrier.  That was as far as the Unryu building program ever got.  The Unryus were essentially scaled-down versions of Hiryu, one of the IJN's best prewar fleet carriers, save that their islands were mount in standard fashion on the forward starboard side of the hull, as with Hiryu's half-sister Soryu.  The first two ships in the class also shared the same power train and propulsion system as Soryu, although Katsuragi had to be built with destroyer turbines instead due to wartime shortages and suffered a two-knot reduction in top speed accordingly, with the resulting interior dead space filled with extra fuel tanks (which increased operating range).  Unryu was torpedoed and sunk by the USN submarine USS Redfish on 19 December 1944, Amagi was so badly damaged in an American bombing raid on 26 January 1945 that her final fitting-out was abandoned (and she was later scrapped postwar with the rest), and the final fitting-out of Katsuragi was abandoned due the end of the war.  She too was scrapped along with the wrecked Amagi and the other uncompleted Unryus after the war.  It should also be noted that Ikoma would have been the lead ship for a group of nine Unryus to be built to a simplified design for easier construction, and that is sometimes treated as a class in its own right.  She was only 60% complete when the war ended, and she too was scrapped in her slip along with the rest of the unfinished Unryus.  To find out more about Unryu, follow the link below:

This is a straight port with no changes by me.

This is not my model.  All I did was port it to OBJ for you.  Please credit stuart277 as the original creator if you use this in any of your own 3D projects.  You do not have to credit me for my part.

NOTE - Naval historians, armchair amateur experts, and both naval warfare sim players and naval video game fans often find it convenient to group Unryu and Ikoma together as a single class for purposes of force level discussions.  Statwise they were practically identical.  Aside from AA gun placement and the types installed (which was still fairly similar), the main visual difference between the two would have been their funnel spacing.  Unryu's were close togeother, while Ikoma's were spaced out due to the type of boilers it had and the way they were installed in the hull.  Because of this it's probably okay to use the same model to represent both in your IJN fantasy fleets, until such time as I get a dedicated Ikoma class model added to my C21VN collection.
