Resident Evil: Exodus - The Tale of Elza Walker, or RE Exodus or just plain Exodus for short, was my first and only full-length completed fan fiction novel. I wrote it as a demonstration to Capcom that it was still possible to take everything that had been left over in the cancelled video game we know today as Resident Evil 1.5 (RE1.5), including the character of Elza Walker, and re-weave it with both existing concurrent material from other Resident Evil adventures and with all-new material into an updated and entertaining adventure that would be as exciting as anything else in the Resident Evil franchise. It was very well received by the fans back when I completed it in the mid-2010s and is still well thought of today. Capcom's official reaction was a very interesting one. I got a very nice letter from them (which I still have) in which they praised both my effort and my creativity but had chosen to pass on doing anything with Exodus for two reasons. First, they told me that if anything were going to be done with the corpus of RE1.5, they were going to do it, as it was their intellectual property and not mine. Can't argue with that, because they're right in the long run. Second, what I had proposed was too expensive for them to undertake, given that they already had a major project in the works and simply couldn't afford to take on Exodus given its projected production costs. That "other project," by the way, turned out to be the combined RE2 REmake and RE3 REmake, so that's understandable (wink). At the end of that letter they also shared something else with me which I have never forgotten. They advised me that since I was such a creative individual, then I needed to be working on my own unique creations instead of spinning my wheels working with the efforts of others. They didn't put it quite like that (they were more polite) but that was the general gist of what Capcom meant. It's the nicest rejection letter I've ever received in my part-time career as a professional writer, and I took their advice to heart. That's why I now have six published books to my name and will soon have seven, all of them entirely my own effort. As for Exodus, I eventually took it and completely rewrote the whole thing, removing all of the Capcom Resident Evil derived materials and replacing them with content of my own original creation. The end result was the acclaimed survival horror novel Escape from Metro City (or Escape for short, five-star rating on Amazon last time I checked), which you can buy in print or e-book form from your favorite bookseller or buy the excellent audiobook from Audible. Capcom's advice had been sound, and I pass it on to all of you who may be also be spinning your wheels as fanfic writers but yearn deep in your hearts for something more. As for those of you who are content to spin your wheels and insist on limiting yourselves to fanfics, well ... (chuckle) ... more power to you.
To celebrate both the praise I've gotten for Escape and to acknowledge its origins in my fanfic novel RE Exodus, I've decided to repost all of my old Exodus promo digital artwork and old novel development storyboards. The latter I made as I was writing the novel, using the resources I was gathering at the time as part of the RE1.5 REvisited project to help me visualize specific scenes in the story. I did the promo art to promote both the Exodus novel and the resources of the RE1.5 REvisited project by showing off how the latter could be used to do something like the former. And while at this point Capcom has done nothing more on their own with Elza Walker other than to finally make her a canon character by mentioning her in RE2 REmake and giving Claire a revamped version of Elza's firesuit as an earnable alternate outfit, it just goes to show you that fans CAN make a difference if they keep at it long enough. The long history and hunt for RE1.5 eventually drew me in and made me a fan of it, and that in turn eventually led to Exodus the fanfic novel. I'm happy to be sharing the images with you again, and I hope you take them to heart -- as well as my longstanding desire to see Elza Walker live again in an all-new and entertaining Resident Evil adventure on a modern 3D immersive game engine, no matter who does it. Capcon, the fans, I don't care. I'd love to see it happen before the time comes when I have to take that final shuffle off to Buffalo someday. In the meantime, take these images and both the concepts and story driving them to heart and run with them for all they're worth. Thank you.
