This was created at the time using a modified version of the REDC version of the Lab Main Shaft but with the extraneous extra walkways removed in order to be more accurate to the RE2 version. The RE1.5 version is essentially the same thing but with shorter walkways and with the connecting hallways beyond longer. The change in the diameter of the Main Shaft was made as part of the RE1.5-to-RE2 reboot process. FYI your average RE fan or game usually doesn't notice this, just as they don't notice that many parts of the RE2 Lab are somewhat redressed takes on their RE1.5 predecessors. That's nice to know for any of you would-be RE1.5 recreators, since it allows you to get away with re-using many RE2/REDC/RE2REmake-style Lab location models (but not all) for recreating RE1.5 scenes -- provided you chose carefully and pick you camera angles right, of course.

While all the melodrama regarding the more serious of Elza's injuries was taking place in the Lab Security Office, what were Kevin and John doing in the novel proper at the same time?

... Rita had shooed them out once Elza had been brought in and put on the bed. They had used the last of their strength to clear the area, as well as finding and getting Rita and Linda the supplies they needed to properly treat Elza's many wounds. After that, both had taken turns sleeping and standing watch. Both of them had badly needed the rest, and they had both gone to sleep almost immediately once it was their turn.

There's a wonderful scene with Rita, Kevin, and John discussing Elza's wounds and how this impacts their current situation that follows immediately on this and that I'm going to have to skip since I never did a storyboard image for it. If you want to find out what happened in that scene, read the book! XD
