Description

NOTE - This image is of a high-poly Silent Hunter series replacement for my older hacked-up low poly model, which was built with selected parts scavenged from Shessi's waterline CFS2 model fitted on the hull of the Blazing Angels 2 low poly full hull (but minimal feature) model.

------------------------------

Ported to OBJ from the model included with the game Silent Hunter 3 (SH3) by Ubisoft.  Preview picture posed in XNALara XPS.  NO MODEL DOWNLOAD.

This was a select group of four Type VIIC U-boats (U-256, U-441, U-621, U-953) that were modified in mid-1943 in order to add extra AA weaponry so they could serve as armed escorts for U-boats returning home surfaced, helping to defend them against any Allied air attacks.  Three more were slated for conversion (U-211, U-263, U-271) and work is known to have begun but was eventually stopped.  Why?  These modified U-boats, known as U-flak boats on both sides, only worked for about two months before the Allies developed effective countermeasures against them.  These usually consisted of adding attacks by fast surface units (MTBs, destroyers, etc.) to their attacks by air, so the German soon gave up on this and went back to building regular U-boats ... although they did start beefing up their standard AA armament considerably, and some individual U-boat commanders beefed their boats up even more on their own.  By the end of the war there were (or had been) selected U-boats of various types that were armed just as heavily or comparably as the 1943 U-flak boats.  All of the U-flak boats were reconverted into normal U-boats and all were lost during the war.  To find out more about the German U-flak boats of World War II, follow the link below:

This is a straight port with no changes by me save to raise the periscopes so you can see them.  They aren't always present in Silent Hunter model rips because model ripping utilities tend not to port things that aren't visible in the camera line-of-sight, and if the periscopes aren't raised even a bit then they often don't get captured.  The Silent Hunter 4 series American submarines are bad about this unless you capture them in-game with the scopes raised or extract their models piecemeal (see below).  Fortunately the ones on this particular model rip effort (of mine) were raised just enough to be there in the rip data.  Just wanted to let you know if any of you have that issue in trying to rip other vintage submarine models from other video games.

While I am not making my OBJ port of this available for public download, you can get it yourself one of two different ways.  The first and easiest is with a 3D model ripper (3D Ripper DX or NinjaRipper recommended).  The second and more complicated way involves using the SKWAS/s3ditor model utility to extract it piecemeal from the game data and then rebuilding it using your preferred 3D modeling software.  Use whichever way works best for you if you need it for any of your own personal 3D projects.
