Description

Ported to OBJ from the low-poly model created by Atheorhaven for the Starfleet Command (SFC) series of video games.  Originally created by Vanderveer Photo Effects for the TOS episode "The Immunity Syndrome."  Preview picture posed in XNALara XPS.  NO MODEL DOWNLOAD.

This was and remains the largest single naturally occurring life form (as opposed to mechanical or an artificial construct such as TMP's V'Ger) that has yet been encountered in the entirety of the Trek multiverse.  It is exactly what its name says -- a HUGE single-cell amoeba whose natural environment is the vacuum of space.  The space amoeba originated from somewhere outside our galaxy and is roughly 11,000 miles long (!!!), with its width varying from 2,000 to 3,000 miles (!!!).  It travels within an even larger negative energy zone surrounding it that it generates to protect itself, one which is so powerful that it can literally suck the life and other forms of energy out of anything that enters it, even if it's shielded and given enough time.  Even the most powerful energy screens known in the TOS/TAS era are not entirely effective against it, although they will slow down its energy-draining effects.  It was found that a starship with its shields at full strength can last long enough to reach the amoeba itself though its protective negative energy field provided proper counteractive steps are taken, but it doesn't last long after that (about an hour or so at most) once it encounters the space amoeba itself.  The space amoeba feeds on whatever it encounters no matter what it is, matter or energy or both, and it can generate antimatter in order to break it apart into digestible bits.  Its one weakness is that like its microscopic counterpart, the space amoeba is not intelligent and has best been described as "a bull grazing in the pasture of space."  BTW it is also capable of reproduction just like its microscopic counterpart, although on a more vast scale.  The space amoeba is VERY dangerous despite its lack of intelligence and can destroy anything it encounters no matter how big it is or how powerful, given enough time.  The only known way to destroy one is to somehow last long enough to get through its surrounding negative energy field and penetrate the space amoeba itself, then destroy its nucleus with a sufficiently large amount of antimatter.  Once that happens the space amoeba will die, its immense negative energy field goes away, and its corpus dissolves fairly quickly before what is left drifts away.

This is probably the largest and most powerful natural life form your characters will encounter, with the next largest being the planet-eating space cloud seen in TAS "One of Our Planets Is Missing."  It has been theorized by some Trek fans that both came from the same region of extragalactic space, given the way they are and the fact that they share both similar traits and certain general aspects of their, uhmm, "biology" (is that the appropriate word?).  There's no way to confirm this and we will probably never know for certain, but it remains an intriguing theory.

As per the original TOS episode and with many space monsters in the Trek multiverse, the space amoeba is best treated as a once-in-a-blue moon event in your own projects and stories.  You can play it the way it's played in the original episode, you can have it suddenly appear on the edge of a major space battle and then do its dead-level best to "eat" ALL of the combatants regardless of side (which it mostly likely will given enough time), and so on.

This is canon, given its appearance in TOS "The Immunity Syndrome."
