Description

Ported to OBJ from the low poly model created by the original Virtual Navy team for use with Microsoft's Combat Flight Simulator 2 (CFS2).  Preview picture posed in XNALara XPS.  NO MODEL DOWNLOAD.

This was the last class of "boomers" or SSBNs (strategic ballistic missile submarines) built for the United States Navy (USN) during the Cold War.  Construction started in 1976, with the first entering service in 1981 and the last entering service in 1997.  At almost 19,000 tons displacement submerged they are the largest submarines yet built by the USN, with only the former Soviet Union's Typhoon and later Russian Federation's Borei class displacing more (but neither being as long).  They also carry more ballistic missiles than either Borei or the production Typhoon (*), 24 vs 16(20) and 20 respectively.  These have formed the backbone of the USN's underwater strategic missile threat ever since they began entering service, first supplementing and then replacing the older "Freedom for 41" SSBN classes in that regard.  With one exception (USS Henry M. Jackson) all are named for U.S. states, thus replacing the now-defunct battleship class warships in regard to that USN naming tradition.  In 2002 the lead boat Ohio underwent a successful conversion into a guided cruise missile submarine (SSGN), with three of her sister boats likewise converted over the next six years.  All of the Ohios are expected to remain in service until the 2030s, when they will be replaced by the planned Columbia class in the SSBN role and payload-modified Virginia class boats in the SSGN role respectively.  For more information on the USN's Ohio class SSBNs, follow the link below:

While this isn't the best Ohio class 3D model out there, I ported it because it was convenient and it was low poly.  It's also quite nice for being low poly.  Consider it a placeholder until I find the time (and the proper model) to port a better one.  Until then enjoy, and be glad that the mighty Ohio is finally represented in my online Century 21 Virtual Navy Collection.

This is not my model.  All I did was port it for you.  Please credit the original Virtual Navy team for Microsoft's Combat Flight Simulator series of games for their efforts.  You do not have to credit me for my part.

(*) The fictional proto-Typhoon SSBN Red October from the Tom Clancy novel The Hunt for Red October carries 26, two more than Ohio's 24, but the real-life Typhoon is shorter than the fictional one and only carries 20 because of this.
