The next morning, a Wednesday, Gil arrived at work a little late and with a spring in his step.  It was obvious to all the staff that Dessa and Gil had a good evening together.  Gil is normally kind and jovial, but the pressure of the furniture order had weighed on him, making him a lot less sociable, and sometimes irritable.  Now all of the pressure seemed to have dissipated from Gil, much to the delight Herb and the crew.

“Remind me to get Dessa a nice Christmas Card, this year!” Herb joked with one of the fabricators.

Dessa had reminded Gil by their joyful and sensual coupling that there were more important things than work.  They repeated their lovemaking that evening, embracing each other after in the warm glow afterwards, kissing and pledging their love for each other.  Gil looked into Dessa’s bright blue eyes, thankful to be with her.  They fell asleep together, with her head resting peacefully on his chest.

The next day was sunny but cool.  Gil arrived at work, and saw that Herb was wrestling with the sawdust evacuator system again.  In spite of their best efforts, this necessary device was clogging due to the workload, and slowing production.  Herb was clearly frustrated, but Gil’s improved mood soon calmed matters.  After clearing the lines, Gil called a local hardware store to pick up an extra portable filter unit.   He then called the filter system vendor to see if they could help right away.  They said Gil needed a bigger motor and intake duct due to the increased work load.  He ordered one, and then checked on the rest of the shop.

It was near noon when he finally was able to look at his email.  As he scrolled through the wide variety of messages that had accumulated, he looked out his window.  At the Lab break area across the way he saw the woman he had seen on the phone Tuesday night.  She was sitting again at the table, wearing a lab coat and her hijab.  She was eating her lunch from a container, and talking with a man sitting across from her.  The man also wore a lab coat and had a lunch in a bag.

Gil had completely forgotten about the woman and her odd behavior.  Curious, Gil watched for a few minutes.  The two talked and laughed.  When they finished their meals, they both went inside, using the same identification process Gil had witnessed before.

After they went inside, Gil looked around some more at the lab building.  It was newly constructed.  Gil had watched as an old metal warehouse was dismantled, and the new lab structure of tilt-up concrete slabs went up quickly.  A sign in front identified the building as the future home of Dynetrix Laboratories.  In no time, they had a roof on, and a wide variety of air conditioners, vent fans, and filter systems sprouted above the parapets.  So quickly did the lab start operation that the paint was still going on the exterior walls.

Activity at the lab varied widely, but there always seemed to be people there.  They had a full time security guard, who often walked rounds and said hello if Gil was in the lot.  The building was well lighted, and security cameras were ubiquitous on poles and parapets around the facility.  Gil wondered what was going on in a facility that seemed to be so secretive, especially by its employee’s behavior.  Gil did a web search on Dynetrix, and found little of use, except that the company’s headquarters were in San Antonio, Texas, and that they specialized in molecular and particle materials research.  That sounded like the opposite scale of the wood, fabric and metal he used.

That weekend, Gil took Dessa to a Traverse City bed and breakfast.  It was just the break they both needed.  It also allowed them a little time sightsee, shop, to plan their wedding for the following Spring.  They also screwed like rabbits!  Gil felt renewed when he arrived at work on Monday.  At noon, he asked if anyone on the shop floor if they wanted to go to lunch, and he got a unanimous ‘yes’.  They had a good lunch, and a chance to laugh as well as talk about hard things, too.  It turned out to be a good team building event.

On the way back, Herb and Gil talked shop.  Gil also let on that he and Dessa had picked a date for the wedding.  Herb laughed out loud, his old grizzled face wrinkled in in joy.  He gave Gil a playful punch in the arm, as they pulled into the back lot.

“‘Bout time you got hitched to that excellent woman!  I was afraid you were gonna be married to this shop instead!”  Herb quipped.

As they rolled up to their end of the building, they saw the woman with the head scarf, sitting on the metal picnic table provided by the lab for employees.  Her lunch bag was beside her.  She was sitting on top of the table, feet on the seat, wearing a lab coat over her slacks and blouse.  She also had sunglasses on.  Her head bobbed and foot tapped in tune to a song playing in her earbuds from her phone.  She seemed oblivious to the Gil’s pickup.

Gil and Herb stopped and watched the woman.  She stood and began to dance, in an expert and sensual style.  Her lab coat opened, revealing more of her figure.  She appeared to have a rather large chest, and hourglass figure, fit snugly in a purple satin blouse and trim slacks.  She held up her phone, as if it was a microphone and sang…

“I kissed a girl and I liked it!  I kissed a girl and i liked it!”

She then became aware that Gil and Herb were sitting in the truck, watching her silently.  Her jaw dropped, and she fumbled with her phone as she clumsily pulled her lab coat closed to button it.  She pulled her earbuds out, grabbed her lunch bag, and briskly headed up the stairs to the door.  Again she fumbled, this time with her badge, which fluttered to the stair platform.   As she stooped to pick up the badge, she looked back nervously at the truck to see if Gil and Herb were watching.  They both had gotten out of the truck.  Gil tried to say “hi” again, but she ignored them, and got in the door as fast as she could.

Gil and Herb looked at each other. “Now there’s something you don’t see every day ‘round here!” Herb stated plainly.

“No, sir,” Gil said, now looking at the closed door on the lab.  “No, it isn’t!”  They both headed back to the shop.
