Lore: The Codex of the Shrieking Souls was reputedly bound in the shadowy depths of the Underworld. Each of its pages is a patchwork of skin from those who dared dabble in the forbidden arts, and its ink, a mix of their ashes and will. Its creation is a tale of a cabal of necromancers whose thirst for forbidden knowledge led them to eternal damnation, their spirits now part of the tome’s ghastly ensemble.
Properties of the Codex of the Shrieking Souls:
Spectral Script: The book holds numerous necromantic spells. A spellcaster who dares to read from it can cast any necromancy spell they find within its pages once per day without using a spell slot.
Curse of the Ancients: The Codex allows the caster to place a curse upon an enemy. Once per long rest, the caster can cast bestow curse without expending a spell slot.
Summon Wailing Wraith: Once per week, the user can summon a wraith that wails in torment, causing fear in those who hear it. The wraith follows the caster’s commands to the best of its sorrowful ability.
Curse of the Codex of the Shrieking Souls:
Torment of the Damned: Every time a spell is cast from the Codex, the souls bound within it attempt to drag the caster into madness. The caster must succeed on a DC 16 Wisdom saving throw or suffer the effects of the confusion spell for 1 minute.
Soulbound Echo: The user begins to hear the constant whispers of the damned, causing disadvantage on all concentration checks for spellcasting.
Necromancer's Bane: The Codex yearns for company in its desolation. If the Summon Wailing Wraith is used, there is a chance the wraith will turn against its summoner after its task is complete.
Use in Campaign: The Codex of the Shrieking Souls could be the centerpiece of an adventure, perhaps necessary to thwart an undead uprising or to break a curse afflicting an ancient lineage. It may be sought after by a villain intent on harnessing its power, or by a group of heroes who need its knowledge to avert a greater calamity. The Codex offers great power, but using it comes with dire risks, not just to the user, but to the very fabric of their soul.
