Whispered about in hushed tones among the necromantic circles, the Lexicon of the Forbidden Vessel is an infamous tome of deathly magic. Bound in the flesh of sacrificed fiends and etched with the lifeblood of the undead, this book is a collection of some of the most jealously guarded secrets of necromancy. Its creation is tied to the ascendance of the Lich-Lord Terakus, who infused the book with his consciousness and the souls of his fallen enemies.
Properties of the Lexicon of the Forbidden Vessel:
Resonance of the Undead: The Lexicon allows the wielder to cast animate dead without using a spell slot once per day, and the undead it raises are more resilient than usual.
Whispers of Terakus: Once per week, the user can consult with the spirit of Lich-Lord Terakus for guidance, granting insight into any one necromancy spell or dark ritual they seek to understand.
Vessel of Souls: The user can draw upon the souls trapped within the book to fuel their spellcasting, regaining one expended spell slot of up to 4th level once per long rest.
Curse of the Lexicon of the Forbidden Vessel:
Soul Drain: Each spell cast from the Lexicon leeches the life force of the user. They must make a DC 18 Constitution saving throw or their hit point maximum is reduced by the level of the spell cast. This can only be restored by a greater restoration spell or similar magic.
Echoes of the Damned: The voices of the trapped souls can drive the user to madness. They must succeed on a DC 16 Wisdom saving throw after each use, or suffer the effects of the confusion spell for the next hour.
Terakus's Grasp: The lingering will of Terakus seeks to dominate the user. After utilizing Whispers of Terakus, they must pass a DC 19 Charisma saving throw or be compelled to carry out a task that furthers the lich lord’s nefarious agenda.
Use in Campaign: The Lexicon of the Forbidden Vessel could be a powerful artifact for a necromancer seeking to raise an undead army, or it could be the key to defeating a lich if its secrets can be turned against its creator. It also serves as a grim reminder of the cost of delving too deep into the dark arts, presenting a moral quandary to any who might seek to use its knowledge. Using the Lexicon could provoke confrontations with paladins, clerics, and other righteous foes, as well as attract the unwanted attention of other dark practitioners who covet its power.
