A minor, but significant, evolution of the DEFIANT class Armed Escorts/Fast Destroyers. I read over fifteen years ago that the DEFIANT ships were designated as Fast Destroyers who performed double-duty as Armed Escorts for much larger ships. When escorting a ship or convoy the DEFIANT ships would usually work in pairs alongside a much larger battlecruiser or even a dreadnought. We saw this in one episode of Voyager when Harry Kim was transported back in time to Earth before he would become a crewman on Voyager. Two DEFIANT ships escorted an AKIRA-Class vessel in an attempt to recover a prototype shuttle. They all coordinated and essentially worked as one.
