From the safety of the shore, it is beautiful and calming to consider the ocean and all it's mystery. Though when we trespass upon it's surging waters, in the furor of storm, one misstep is all that is required before one is claimed by the lost souls of the sea.

Drowning is a common dream with a myriad of attached meanings; the most common include a feeling of being overwhelmed, a lack of control over one's own life, and a general feeling of hopelessness. As a child, I would experience these dreams periodically; it was the type I would always remember the most vividly. It was the type where you would wake up with a gasp of air, a beating heart, and in a cold sweat. I painted this piece with those memories and emotions in mind.

Painted for #dahorrorchallenge , I wanted to express the feeling of dread this sailor is experiencing before his lifeline to the living world snaps and he is dragged forevermore into the deep.
