Description
I think their predominant color was a greyish-green, though they had white bellies. They were mostly shiny and slippery, but the ridges of their backs were scaly. Their forms vaguely suggested the anthropoid, while their heads were the heads of fish, with prodigious bulging eyes that never closed. At the sides of their necks were palpitating gills, and their long paws were webbed. They hopped irregularly, sometimes on two legs and sometimes on four. I was somehow glad that they had no more than four limbs. Their croaking, baying voices, clearly used for articulate speech, held all the dark shades of expression which their staring faces lacked ... They were the blasphemous fish-frogs of the nameless design - living and horrible. The Shadow Over Innsmouth
A satisfying rework of an old piece I submitted some time ago. The original version was rather too whimsical and cartoony and never felt quite right. This is much more like what I had in mind when I first sketched it. More gnarley and bestial, well icthian really.
Left the original intact as well, rather than overwrite it, as it makes for a nice comparison and has its own charm [link]

I love the iridescent scales here, and the way you drew the inside of the mouth. You've done a great job at staying true to the text and yet making something totally unique.

One of the deff most accurate impressions of a deep one that I found till now. You must have read the Mythos very carefully.

Well, he does have that " fish gasping for air" look.
(And 'Lawrence' was name of the insane/locked up cousin of the narrator of Innsmouth that he was going to free and take back to the sea with him at the end of the story.)
So just think of it from the Deep Ones point of view...
"Whoo-hoo! We're going to town! We're gonna get chicks!"
"Hey baby are you a fisherman? 'Cause you sure reeled me in fine."
I mean, really, there's not much for the Deep Ones to do underwater. It's kinda boring down there.

Great, outstanding work as always.
Althought having "heads of fish" and being "fish-frogs" I always imagined them without teeth or with shorter, more degenerated one.
But still it's a great artistic impressin, and freaking one too

Is it weird to think that I actually appeal more to the one with the sharp teeth than the one with humanoid ones? o.O Anyway, from the looks of the two, you have definitely come a long way when you study the comparisons, not only for the improvement from the original, but your style as a whole. Because the strides you've taken to achieve that improvement are evident in this image, and you've surely crossed a new threshold of mastery in your artistic prowess when you look back at your works. As ever, I'm mind-blown that you can exhibit a near photographic realism in your pictures, and even as ambiguous as the descriptions may be, you always depict the creatures in question in such intriguing, splendidly morbid ways that make it so easily credible to the story.
As ever, there's such a captivating depth of detail that really emphasize the features in a way, amplifying the monstrous intent of its countenance as it may be trying to convey. Every little scale and wrinkle shows a mind boggling measure of devotion, and the shading really gives the creature definition and dimension, even around the flabby rolls of skin.
The intricate details of the mouth were executed with such experience that I would think a person would need to reference from a photo countless times over to manage, and to have done so independently, I would be both baffled and astounded! o.o There's such realism that almost makes my jaw drop! The gills really intensify the eeriness of the image, resembling two sets of grooves that were incised into the flesh by claws, and it's interesting how the eyes almost appear to be just sitting jauntily on closed sockets, like two colourful, erect bodies of water, and I really love the variety of colours utilized in this image.
There's a strange, opalescent feel about it that gives me the impression of the creature possessing cystic flesh, while contemporaneously giving one the idea of the lighting being nondescript, yet chilling and ominous. (I'm going to say this again, but.... those teeth... o.o Wow! So much detail to every last one!)
Outstanding work, as always! Of all the macabre works out there I've seen thus far, your skills and concepts remain unparalleled!

This reminds me of one of the monsters from Jade Empire for original XBox. I think they were just called 'cannibals', but don't quote me on that x3 This is wayyy more brutal-looking than those were though. Those characters still had a 'goofy' quality about them, while this has a more horrific aspect to it

Not that I disliked the previous one, but you really brought it up a level or two with this revision. It has much more of a translucent fishy feel with the iridescent colors, and the gills are a great and disturbing touch. I would have not expected this palette to work so well here, it's almost the rainbow yet it isn't cheery at all!

thanks a lot. had been meaning to come back to that pic and give it a bit of a revamp almost since i did it first time around.
I tend to play around with various colour blends in PS until i find something that im comfortable with. Thought that the end result with this one went a little way towards giving a little iridescence of scale.
