While the oldest known references of the word 'alicorn' refer to the material of a unicorn's horn, that is not the case with it's use in Bronydom.
Latin.Β
Alea = Wing
Cornu = horn
Ergo Alicorn = winged and horned

Well, there is also some other latin stuff about alicorns.......*rummages in drawers* FOUND IT!
ok, Ali= Garlic? corn= horn. so, GARLIC + HORN = UNICORN GARLIC!
Ala= wing Corn= horn. so, WING + HORN = CELESTIA, LUNA, CADANCE, AND TWILIGHT!
Alacorn=correct, Alicorn=INCORRECT!

The Alea-Cornu etymology is retroactive, so the fit won't be perfect.
No one knows where calling them Alicorns originated.

I always thought they'd gone with the overly simple origin: all-in-one-unicorn. Which got smashed togetherΒ into alicorn.
